Mini Crossbows: Which One to Buy (Toothpicks, Steel Balls and Laser Sights)

Ace Sniper mini crossbow in stainless steel

A mini crossbow is a palm-size crossbow, usually stainless steel, that fires toothpicks or small steel balls 15 to 25 meters. They started as a desk toy for people who like to tinker and turned into a whole category. This guide covers what to look for, which model fits which person, and what to expect when the box arrives.

What a Mini Crossbow Actually Is

Picture a crossbow shrunk to the length of your hand. The limbs are spring steel, the string is a thin steel cable, and the body is machined stainless. You pull the string back, drop a toothpick or a steel ball into the channel, aim, and press the trigger. Range on ours is 15 to 25 meters depending on the model and the ammo. That is enough to knock over a row of bottle caps across a room and not enough to do much more than that.

The good ones feel like a tool, not a toy. Weight, machining and a clean trigger are what separate a $40 mini crossbow from the plastic versions sold at gas stations.

Toothpicks or Steel Balls

This is the first decision. Every mini crossbow shoots toothpicks. Some also shoot steel balls, which fly straighter, hit harder and do not snap.

If the person you are buying for will mostly shoot at paper targets on a desk, toothpicks are plenty. If they want to knock things over, go with a model that takes steel balls.

Features Worth Paying For

Self Loading Chamber

The Ace Sniper stores extra toothpicks in the body and drops the next one into the channel when you draw. Faster reloads, fewer dropped toothpicks under the couch. It is the one most people pick when they already own a basic model.

Laser Sight

The Ghost Hunter mounts a small laser on the rail. At desk distances it does make you more accurate, and it makes the whole thing look like a prop from a heist film.

Finish

Silver stainless is the standard. The Bowman, Ace Sniper and BB Sniper also come in black. The Phoenix and Dark Knight add gold-tone winged limbs if the person likes something that stands out on a shelf.

Which One to Buy

  • First mini crossbow, or a gift for someone who has never had one: the Bowman. It is the original, it is the least expensive, and it does everything the category promises.
  • Someone who already has one: the Ace Sniper for the self loading chamber, or the BB Sniper for steel balls.
  • The person who wants the showpiece: the Ghost Hunter with the laser, or the Phoenix.
  • Office desk, small apartment: the Transformer. It is the most compact of the lineup.

Safety and Common Sense

A mini crossbow is small, but a toothpick at 20 meters can still take an eye out. Shoot at things, never at people or pets. Keep it away from young kids. Wear glasses if you are shooting steel balls at hard surfaces, because they bounce. Most of the fun is in setting up targets anyway. We wrote a whole post on target ideas if you want a starting point.
